The Great Resignation is prompting the Great Ownership Revolution(TM) among Americans who are searching for flexibility and financial freedom.
When the pandemic shuttered offices and forced people to work remotely, many hard-working Americans discovered an uptick in flexibility and greater work-life balance. It also gave people time to consider their future and discover a new demand for greater control of their personal income, wealth, and equity holdings. Many Americans realized their current roles were leaving them feeling battered and bruised as their companies continued to pile on responsibilities without providing additional compensation.
As the pandemic wanes and offices start reopening, many adults are coming to the conclusion that they aren’t willing to sacrifice their newfound freedom and flexibility. Spending more time on the home front gave them the opportunity to reimagine their future, and they are quitting their jobs in droves for better pay, cash incentives, and more benefits. In 2021, a record of 47.4 million Americans quit their jobs. As a result of the mass exodus, Anthony Klotz, an associate professor of management at Texas A&M University, created the term “The Great Resignation” in an article for Bloomberg. While the Great Resignation is forcing businesses to rethink how they treat their employees, the gap between the wealthy and low-income workers continues to widen, and middle-class Americans are paying the price.
The dawn of the new year reveals the data supports a shift away from traditional 9 to 5 jobs. Terry Powell, Visionary Founder of The Entrepreneur’s Source®, correctly predicted mass resignations would prompt a Great Ownership Revolution last year. Americans are exiting the corporate rat race and discovering the benefits of entrepreneurship. Nearly 5 million new business applications were filed from January through November 2021, up 55 percent from the same period in 2019. In addition to helping owners provide a legacy for their families, the small-business boom is giving communities a boost by creating new jobs.
